Shipping to Åland Islands

If you want to start shipping to Åland Islands, there are a couple of things good to consider. Åland is part of Finland, but it is outside the EU VAT area, which affects how online stores handle sales and shipments. In practice, selling to Åland works similarly to sending goods outside the EU.

VAT treatment

Because Åland is outside the EU VAT area, sellers in EU VAT area do not charge VAT on goods delivered to Åland. Items are sold tax-free, and the buyer pays any applicable taxes during customs processing.

Customs

Shipments to Åland require customs clearance. This applies to both businesses and private customers. As a Shopify merchant, it is important to ensure that you take care of the customs clearance, either electronically or manually by attaching a CN22 or CN23 customs invoice to the shipment, depending on the shipping carrier and shipping method being used.
