10-digit HS codes

The 6-digit global HS classification code (1234.56) has been the standard in HS codes. Nowadays you can, and sometimes you even must use the 10-digit version (1234.56.7890) of the HS-code, which is a specific product classification number used in international trade.

The structure works like this

First 6 digits – The international HS code. These digits are the same in every participating country and describe the general product category.

Digits 7 — 10 – Further extensions used for tariff purposes or to create more detailed subcategories

Depending on the destination country, you might be required to use the 10-digit version of the HS-code. If the shipment requires customs handling,  There are a lot of good sources to search for HS codes, like Harmonized Tariff Schedule https://hts.usitc.gov/

In Shopify, you can add the HS-code to the product at the Customs information section. As you can see, you can type in the six digit HS-code at the top level and then add the 10-digit version for each country. In Packrooster, the country specific HS code is used at the shipment if it is available.
